Jenni Kufahl dies after lengthy battle with cancer

Posted in NEWS on August 6, 2014 by OBCA

by Jacob Unruh  – The Oklahoman

Jenni Kufahl never liked the nickname “Wimpy, Wimpy.”

It was a moniker jokingly given to her when she was little by her father John Merrell after seeing a trash bag commercial comparing Hefty trash bags to others.

The nickname wore off by the time Kufahl was an adult, but she still brought it up early in her cancer diagnosis after a surgeon praised her toughness.

“Dad, you can’t call me Wimpy anymore,” she told Merrell.

Kufahl died Sunday after a nearly two-year battle with cancer, bringing to end a courageous fight that truly showed her toughness. She was 39.

“She’s the toughest person I’ve ever seen,” said Merrell, the Christian Heritage Academy athletic director. “She wanted to raise her kids to love and honor the Lord.

“That’s why she kept fighting so hard. Even at the end, she just kept fighting. She’s my hero.”

Her funeral is 1 p.m. Thursday at Southern Hills Baptist Church, 8601 S Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, the Kufahls have formed the Kufahl Children College Fund at BancFirst.

Kufahl leaves behind seven children and her husband Heath, the CHA boys basketball and volleyball coach.

She was diagnosed with cancer in October 2012, and since then she caught national attention as she fought the disease.

Heath made the $20,000 half-court shot at an Oklahoma City Thunder game and used the money to help pay for her treatments. She found a temporary relief following the shot, but the cancer quickly returned and forced her to seek a different type of treatment at Envita in Scottsdale, Ariz., in April.

It was there that Kufahl spent the past few months, until returning to Oklahoma City 10 days ago when doctors said there was nothing else they could do.

She spent her finals days surrounded by her family.

“The last three months, even including that time (at Envita), our focus was her and our family,” Heath said. “We really spent, for the most part, all of this time together. That was good.”

Heath said the family will be forever grateful for the outpouring to his family during her treatments.

Friends and family helped raise more than $30,000 for the treatment at Envita — raffling off a storm shelter — and also held an auction for multiple Thunder items in May.

“It was just a blessing to us and it always came at the right time,” Heath said. “It really helped us fight. We had to stop writing thank you notes because we could never get through them all. That kind of support, there are people who don’t have that and we’ve met them.

“God has blessed us with support and the love of hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people. I don’t deserve it, Jenni deserves it and that helped us make it through. Hopefully, that will continue to help us make it through.”

THE 49th ANNUAL OKLAHOMA vs TEXAS FAITH SEVEN GAME

Posted in COACHES CORNER, NEWS, OBCA ALL STAR GAME on June 9, 2014 by OBCA

Texas All-Stars 116      Oklahoma All-Stars 112 OT

By Scott Wright-The Oklahoman

 — In its previous 48 years, the Faith 7 Basketball Bowl has seen its share of big stars.

Most recently, NBA names like Blake Griffin and Andre Roberson stand out. And Saturday night’s game had its share, too, with a handful of players destined for major colleges.

But might it have also had the next Ron Baker, the Wichita State sophomore who made an immediate impact and helped put the mid-major program among the elite the last two seasons?

Tulsa Washington guard Kevin Sims scored 27 points for the Oklahoma All-Stars in a 116-112 overtime loss to Texas in the 49th annual Faith 7 game. Putnam City West’s Omega Harris added 21 points, while Del City’s Brett Cannon had 18 points and seven rebounds for Oklahoma.

Sims was named Oklahoma’s MVP, while Oklahoma Christian signee Jordan Box earned the Texas award with 29 points and six rebounds, hitting 13 of 22 field goals.

While Sims is heading the junior-college route, Harris and Cannon are bound for blossoming programs, hoping to help them take the next step in their growth.

Harris signed with UTEP, coached by Tim Floyd, who is having success at yet another stop along his career journey. Cannon is heading to Arkansas-Fort Smith, which only recently made the transition from junior college to four-year school and is quickly making an impact in NCAA Division II.

“The expectations are growing higher and higher,” Cannon said of UAFS. “We’ve won two conference championships in a row, went to the national tournament this year.

“Growing up, I was taught to fear no man. You just want your opportunity. I’m really excited to get out there and get started.”

The Oklahoma team had a couple of big men headed for big schools — 6-foot-9 Oklahoma State signee Mitchell Solomon of Bixby and Comanche’s Jacob Hammond, a 6-10 Nebraska signee.

On the other side, Texas’ Jamuni McNeace of Allen High School flashed the athleticism he’ll be bringing to OU, and the Texans had others who have signed with Texas Tech, Notre Dame and Miami, Fla.

But Oklahoma got contributions from the likes of Harrah’s Collin Jennings, who has signed with Missouri-Kansas City, and Santa Clara signee Stephen Edwards of Putnam City West.

In all, the Oklahoma team had five Division I signees on the roster, heading to colleges hoping to get to work on the next phase of their careers. They were part of a deep senior class, even if it wasn’t loaded with the elite stars.

“You see what programs like Wichita State did, and it’s exciting,” Jennings said. “Maybe you’ll get some playing time as a freshman and get to make an impact.

“It gives you a chance to make a name for yourself and your team.”
