FROM THE TOP – 2010

Hope everyone is well. What a great year for Basketball in Oklahoma! Congratulations to all the State Champion Coaches and players! I also applaud those whose teams exceeded expectations and overachieved. Some of the great coaching jobs are often overlooked. I continue to be amazed at how many great coaches we have here in Oklahoma.

If you have a desire to learn more about the game I believe there is no better resources than your fellow coaches here in Oklahoma. If you find something out there that you like call up the coach and talk to him. I bet he will help you out-unless he is trying to beat you!!

Please remember the OBCA All-Star weekend June 4th and 5th at Oklahoma Baptist. . I invite you to come early Friday and watch practices and visit. Come out and attend the Players banquet and Hall of Fame induction on Friday night. Come and support our players and listen to some entertaining speeches from our Hall of Fame inductees. It will be worth the trip! The games will be played Saturday afternoon with the Faith 7 later that night. It’s a great weekend. Please be sure to stop and thank OBU coach Doug Tolin and his son Kyle for their work in hosting the games. You might also congratulate them on their NAIA National Championship. I look forward to seeing you at the games.

OBCA President

What a great time of the year! The weather is turning cooler and the days are nice and warm and the sporting scene is hopping. This is my favorite time of the year, with baseball winding down and the playoffs on the horizon, football at all levels in full swing and the best of all, the beginning of basketball practice with the season coming quickly. I hope everyone had a great summer and were able to enjoy the down time with families and friends and recharge for the upcoming basketball season.

As the season gets underway, take some time to enjoy the journey of the season. Think back to all of the mentors that were a part of your life growing up and were probably the reason that you chose to enter the coaching profession. Pick up the phone and give them a call or drop them a note just to say thanks. I would like to take this time to wish each of you the best of luck on the upcoming season and I hope that you are able to achieve all of the goals that you have set for your team.

The Fall Clinic is approaching quickly. It will be held this year on Thursday October 15 on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee with registration starting at 8:00. We have been able to line up a great agenda of speakers and demonstrators, those speaking will be Doug Schumpert of Anadarko High School and Dewayne Bradley of Midwest City High School. Bringing their teams to demonstrate will be Ron Arthur of Shawnee High School and Larry Johnston of Washington High School. Each of these coaches does a great job and we are very excited to have them.

I would like to take this time to thank the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association for allowing me to serve as your President for the past year. It has been one of the greatest honors of my coaching career. I would like to thank all of the officers and especially Mark Wilson for making this such an enjoyable year. We have a great organization and I would like to encourage all of you to get involved with our organization as it continues to grow. Once again, thank you and I look forward to seeing you at the Fall Clinic in Shawnee.

0305281545501ss0603bballgoalhoriz_copy_tAnother basketball season has come and gone leaving behind an exciting year and many memories.  I hope all of you have had a chance to step back and recharge the batteries as we come to the end of the school year and head into the summer months which will be full of camps and basketball activities.  Take some time to enjoy this break from school with your families and to prepare for the next year which will be here before we know it.

Congratulations to all of the state tournament qualifiers and the state champions from each class.  Once again the tournaments were exciting with overtime games and nail biters, with young student/athletes playing their hearts out on the court.  I am truly amazed each year to see the talent level of basketball players and the level of coaching that we have here in Oklahoma.  This is a great game made even greater by the coaches and athletes representing our state.

I would like to encourage you to attend the upcoming OBCA all – star games in Shawnee on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University.  Coach Tolin always does a great job with these games and it is a chance to watch the outstanding seniors one more time.  The date for the games is Saturday June 6.  For more information you can check out the OBCA website at obca.us, which has all the rosters and game times.

Be sure to make plans to attend the summer clinic which will be held in Tulsa this year the last week of July.  Come down and hear the speakers, see old friends, and talk some basketball.  The all – state game will be held on Thursday night at ORU and it will be a last chance to get a look at the outstanding seniors of Oklahoma this year.  We will also be having our general business meeting this week and I would encourage all of you to attend and get involved with the OBCA.

I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe summer!  Enjoy this time away.  Hope to see you all at the OBCA games and the summer clinic.
