Posted in COACHES CORNER, NEWS, Uncategorized on June 6, 2013 by OBCAJune 5, 2013
BARTLESVILLE – The Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association will induct four new members into its Hall of Fame Friday night.
The dinner and ceremony, beginning at 7 p.m., will be held in Geiger Center on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee.
The class of 2013 to be honored: Sid Burton, Joe Gordon, Wiley Ryal and Randy Turney.
Tickets are $14 and may be purchased from Doug Tolin, 405-878-2146.
A look at the four newest members of the OBCA Hall of Fame:
Sid Burton: The Bartlesville College High graduate came back home to lead the Wildcats to the large-school state championship in 1967. Burton’s team defeated Oklahoma City Douglass at the Tulsa Convention Center in one of the greatest upsets in the state’s history. He also coached at Del City from 1968-77.
Joe Gordon: A graduate of Bastrop, La., he came to Oklahoma to play basketball at Seminole Junior College and at Northeastern State University. He served as head coach for 27 years at Wagoner High School and today serves as the assistant director at Indian Capital Technology Center in Muskogee.
Wiley Ryal: The Dewar graduate coached for over 30 years with stops at Dewar, Inola, Henryetta and back to Dewar. At Dewar, Ryal coached his son Mark who played professional baseball for eight years after being a third-round pick by the Kansas City Royals. At Henryetta, Ryal coached future Dallas Cowboys’ great Troy Aikman.
Randy Turney: The graduate of Wakita High School coached for 34 years and finished with a career record of 783-290. During his career, he made stops at Drummond, Dover, Burlington, Enid, Medford, and Cherokee. He grew up as a coach’s kid and both of his daughters are currently head coaches.
